Freeman was also renowned for his hospitality and supplemented his income by keeping liquor to sell for three cents a glass to visitors and fishermen. Portland Head Lighthouse before duplex was built in 1891ĭirectly after Barzillai Delano came Captain Joshua Freeman, who would sit watching the sea with a length of rope by his side, ready in case of sudden shipwreck. The petition described Delano as “a careful keeper” who had “discharged his trust faithfully,” while noting that even $300 a year “would be but a bare subsistence for a small family.” Barzillai Delano died in 1820, but his son, James, would later follow in his father’s footsteps, serving as keeper at Portland Head from 1854 to 1861. Lewis carried this out in 1813, at which time he also installed a new lamp and reflector lighting system of his own design for $2,100.įollowing the submission in 1812 of a petition carrying twenty-two signatures, Delano’s annual salary was increased from $225 to $300. ![]() Lewis suggested removing the poorly built upper section, which would provide a deck for a lantern ten feet in diameter. In November 1812, contractor Winslow Lewis wrote that the lower fifty feet of the tower “was built of the best materials, done in a workmanlike manner.” But when the original masons had parted ways, quality declined. The kitchen of the new, one-story stone cottage was attached to outbuildings, which were joined to the tower. However, this would not happen until 1816, when Henry Dyer was contracted to erect a new, two-room keeper’s house for $1,175. In 1809, Delano bemoaned, “the difficulty in getting from the dwelling House to light House is very great, by reason of the passage being very steep & rocky & in addition to this is often frozen over in the Winter season, by reason of the sea washing over it.” He asked the government to build a passageway connecting the tower and dwelling. From 1793 until his death in 1795, Greenleaf was paid $160 per annum.ĭavid Duncan briefly assumed Greenleaf’s duties until Barzillai Delano took over in 1796. In June 1792, he wrote that during the previous winter, ice on the lantern glass would freeze so thick he had to melt it off. By November though, Greenleaf was ready to quit, because he couldn’t afford to stay. Greenleaf received the right to live in the keeper’s house and fish and farm in the vicinity in lieu of a salary. The light, powered by sixteen whale-oil lamps, first shone on January 10, 1791, following its dedication by Marquis de Lafayette. President Washington appointed Captain Joseph Greenleaf-a veteran of the Revolutionary War-as the first keeper. Nichols finished the lighthouse and a small dwelling in late 1790. Portland Head Lighthouse was the first lighthouse completed under the act, after Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton allocated a sum not exceeding $1,500 in August 1790 to finish the lighthouse on Portland Head.Ī fiscally minded President George Washington asked that the tower be built from local rubblestone, which could be “handled nicely when hauled by oxen on a drag.” Masons Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols set to work on the envisioned fifty-eight-foot tower, but when they were ordered to increase the height to seventy-two feet for visibility reasons, Bryant quit. The Massachusetts colonial government set aside $750 for a lighthouse at Portland Head in 1787, but the project would not be completed until after the First Congress passed the Lighthouses Act in 1789, which placed lighthouses under control of the federal government. ![]() In July 1786, “the most populous and merchantile” town of Falmouth, was incorporated into the town of Portland, and by the end of the century, Portland would be described as “one of the most thriving commercial towns in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.” (Maine would become a separate state in 1820.) Trade was burgeoning, but reluctance to fund the government remained. Portland Head Lighthouse, situated on a rocky point on the west side of the channel leading to Portland Harbor in Maine, has a history that reads like a Who’s Who from the early years of the nation. ![]() ![]() ![]() The sound is also a nice and calming, lulling you to be half as mad as you really should be. The outer space background also provides a nice, uncluttered background for the madness before you. Along with the structures, the effects of some of the substances, particularly the lasers and the plasma, are really nice on the eyes. Being 3D, the graphics have quite a bit more depth than they did on the first game. I just want you to grasp this.Īside from the puzzle aspect, the game is really quite pretty. Once again, just to pound this into your head, each level, all 50 of them, is entirely in 3D. As mentioned earlier, each of these items can now be rotated in 3D, giving you depth (or infinite frustration) that you definitely didn't have in the first Enigmo. As early as level 6, there is this button that changes the gravity of an area, making things go up instead of down. Each level gives you a certain amount of items to move the substances around with, including great items such as drums, mirrors, and slides, along with some triggers on the walls that must be hit for certain things to happen. The goal of the game, just like the original, is to get whatever substance you have (water, lasers, or plasma) into its corresponding receptacle, which is probably hidden behind a shield or a wall. Its almost necessary to view everything from all angles, just so you know you get the right part in the right place. The puzzles themselves aren't really so different than those in the first Enigmo, other than the fact that you have full 3D control over placement, adding much added frustration to the experience. Each level is presented to you in outer space, with the puzzle spinning towards you like an out of control Mir Spacestation. I mean, I'm sure it is, but wrapping my head around the game is painful at times. It was hard as all get out, but you knew that, with the tools at your disposal, you could get the little water droplets to do your bidding.Įnigmo 2 is a bit different from the first Enigmo, because I'm never quite sure if my goal is even possible. The nice thing about Enigmo was that there were boundaries. It happened to me, so I'm sure it happened to you. People would play a few levels, get sucked in, and then cry themselves to sleep when they got stuck. In the beginning months of the App Store, Enigmo was a certified hit, making people that had no interest in the iPhone think twice. In 2003, Enigmo was the most popular game put out by Pangea because of its visual simplicity but ultimate vicious complexity. Most of their games are shooters of some variety, most of which are 3rd person 3D adventures, but they seemed to have struck gold with the Enigmo series. Pangea, the creators of Enigmo and Enigmo 2, have been making games for Apple computers for years, most (if not all) of which are ported onto your favorite iDevice. Enigmo 2 is the most cruel of all these puzzles because it throws things at you that just seem impossible.Ī little background first. You see a Sudoku puzzle, or even a game like Myst for that matter, and you know what you are getting. What's nice about puzzles is that you can take them at face value. There are typically boundaries and rules given to make the experience controlled, but still challenging. from 'paper' puzzles like crossword puzzles and Sudoku puzzles to digital puzzles like Tetris and Myst, they all make you think slightly outside the box. ![]() Typically puzzles involve some kind of order or knowledge. You can then email these games to your friends to try playing, or even post them to your web site.Nothing in the world drives me more insane that puzzles, because knowing that I can't solve something makes me just a tad bit insane. In addition to the 50 levels that come with Enigmo, there is also a built-in level editor which allows you to create your own entire games. The faster you complete each level, the more bonus you will recieve. You move and rotate into postion various types of bumpers, sliders, accelerators, and sponges in order to divert the flow of the falling droplets. Liquids (water, oil, and lava) fall from "droppers" and will bounce around the walls of a mechanism. Enigmo is a 3D puzzle game where you move various streams of flowing liquid so that the droplets get to their destination. Enigmo is the most unique game that Pangea Software has ever created, and it is a departure from our action-adventure games which we are known for. ![]() ![]() ![]() People often conflate carbon credits with carbon offsets.īoth were born around the same time, but they’re very different. But Kyoto laid the groundwork for the carbon markets we have today. A 2015 study found that 80% of projects that used Kyoto’s carbon credits weren’t actually helping the environment at all. Furthermore, over 100 developing nations were exempt - including, incredibly, China and India.Īmerica and China’s continued production of limitless carbon emissions basically offset member nations’ positive progress.Ĭarbon credits quickly became a source of corruption among developing countries. The United States and Australia were the only developed nations to reject the agreement, arguing it was too restrictive and would smash their economies. This weird chart of “NYT climate-related articles per year” does illustrate how the Kyoto Protocol was the 2nd major collective mitigation event in the history of climate change.īut unfortunately, this first attempt at a global carbon trading scheme failed. ![]() Developed nations agreed to attempt an emissions reduction of 5.2% by 2012. It was a landmark effort, because it committed countries to binding standards of action and introduced a global carbon market. The objective was to stabilize greenhouse gases to stop the effects of climate change. The Kyoto Protocol was a meeting organized by the United Nations to address global warming. The carbon credits story starts in Kyoto, Japan in 1997. When they do, they can buy additional carbon credits to get back under the limit.Ĭontinuously exceeding a cap without purchasing additional credits is often illegal and can lead to court cases & massive fines. So, if a company has 100,000 credits, it can emit one hundred thousand tons of carbon each year.ĭifferent countries have different limits, and plenty of companies go over their number. Source: Combined data from World Bank and CDIACĪ single carbon credit equals one ton of CO2 emissions. Y-axis denotes annual metric tons per capita. As Noah Smith says, the total is ultimately what matters. While The US has the highest emissions per capita, China is the world’s biggest polluter by far. But the Paris Agreement has sparked low-carbon solutions and introduced even more new markets for carbon credits. That’s the thinking, at least.īoth America and Brazil have backed out, and the agreement sets no binding obligations to collectively meet the goal anyways. We’re facing irreversible climate changes either way, but if we can keep it below 2 degrees, we might just hold off a long-term apocalypse. Its goal is to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The 2015 Paris Agreement got countries to agree to target carbon neutrality by 2050. It’s another to ask them to change the fundamental nature of their core industries - especially those countries that are just starting to industrialize.īut there has been some progress. It’s one thing to ask countries to use a different type of deodorant. ![]() ![]() We know CO2 is responsible for most warming, so surely we can band together again and agree to reduce CO2, right? (Side Note: “anthropogenic aerosols” would be a great name for a metal album □) The Paris Agreement But CO2, the largest contributor to warming, is much more embedded into our lives. They were quickly phased out after the Montreal Protocol, ratified by every single UN member state. And honestly, thank God, because denial got us absolutely nowhere.ĬFCs are anthropogenic aerosols. One thing’s for sure: In 2022, people are less likely to call climate change a hoax than ever before. Our ability to swiftly phase out CFCs at the Montreal Protocol has to be one of the most under-discussed events of the past 50 years. (Even today, Australia still has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, and New Zealand is second.) The ozone hole formed over the south pole, so Aus & NZ were (and still are) affected by it more than any other countries. This is well understood by Australia and New Zealand. After all, we have big precedence here: People often forget, but we saved the ozone layer! I believe humans will ultimately be able to exert a small amount of control over the climate. It’s easy to be negative, but a) it’s unproductive, b) it’s demotivating (if the world is gonna burn, why bother trying to fix it?), and c) it ignores the fact that some truly innovative mitigation weapons are being built as we speak. If anything’s gonna end us within the next 80 years it’ll be one of these.īut what fascinates me about climate change is how little optimism there seems to be around it. ![]() ![]() It's generally easier, so definitely apologize if it caused a problem with your schedule. It looks like your tip was bent, so glad you were able to fix that.Īs far as UPS, we always request the customer call UPS to schedule a time to pick it up if they are not available for signature, so you can work out a time with UPS directly. It's best for the customer to mention something at the time of pickup. We do ship everything fully insured, so if the exhaust was damaged we could file a claim. We have passed this info on to J2 to inform them of the problem you had with the packaging. Sometimes manufacturers package their exhaust systems in boxes that aren't of the best quality, and UPS or FedEx can sometimes tear them up. With customer service as below I have edited my overall rating. They were the cheapest on that exhaust but i would have gladly paid a few bucks more for better shippingĮDIT: After getting a response (see below) it goes to show the dedication that Redline 360 has to the buyer. Luckily i was able to fix the most prominent issue, the big crease in the tip, and everything turned out pretty well. In my opinion this was due to poor packing as there was no peanuts or packing material, just 2 round pieces of what looked like foam. It was partially open, there were pieces missing (hardware), and there were a few odd dents in the pipes, and one of the tips had a very big crease in it. This box was picked up in horrendous condition. While it's not 100% their fault it would've been nice to have a helping hand. This lead to constant frustration as I was in and out of meetings and then flying. The response that came back was pretty much that I needed to. An email was sent asking Redline 360 to contact UPS and either ship it to a location within 3 miles or have UPS hold on to it as i was out of town. ![]() Yes it was quick, yes there's insuranceīut, at least this order, was shipped with an signature AND ID requirement, which threw me for a loop. Also, they are very quick to get it out the door which was nice as a lot of time's there's delays in getting things shipped. Overall a reasonably good sales rep and relatively knowledgeable on the products they are selling. I worked with Alex who did a relatively good job of answering questions. ![]() Part Delivered on 7/23, 7/24, picked up on 7/25. ![]() |
